There was a rose that faded young;
I saw its shattered beauty hung
Upon a broken stem.
I heard them say, "What need to care
With roses budding everywhere?"
I did not answer them.
There was a bird, brought down to die;
They said, "A hundred fill the sky-
What reason to be sad?"
There was a girl, whose lover fled;
I did not wait, the while they said,
"There's many another lad."

I'm always checking out the new folk music appearing on Bandcamp, but I must admit, I don't buy that much of it. For better or for worse, the new stuff always bumps up against the Pink Moon test. That is, I could spend the next 30 minutes of my time just listening to Nick Drake again instead. I always find myself wondering: Will this new album reach me with the same depth of emotion? Will it gradually reveal more and more, and bring me back to listen to it dozens, hundreds of times? Will it create a sonic identity that is entirely its own, a place to be?
In the case of The Weather Station, the answer is yes, yes, yes! This music manages that illusion of complicity, that it's just you and them sharing this moment, and the rest of the world be damned. 20 listens in, and I'm still discovering its secrets. This one's a keeper. Gio Makyo
